Modesto man, 49, faces charges after alleged stabbing at Hatch Road and Dallas Street

A Modesto man faces a charge of assault with a deadly weapon in a stabbing Sunday afternoon in south Modesto, but the preliminary investigation suggests there may be self-defense involved, Police said.

Officers responded to a report of a stabbing at a gas station at Dallas Street and Hatch Road between 1:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. Sunday, Lt. Jason Grogan said Monday morning.

Preliminary investigation indicates that Edward Holmes, 49, was sitting in his car at the gas station when he was confronted by the son of his former girlfriend, Grogan said.

A fight ensued, and Holmes stabbed the other man in the chest, causing serious injury, Grogan said.

Holmes drove away from the scene before police arrived, and the 30-year-old victim was taken by ambulance to Doctors Medical Center.

Stanislaus County Sheriff‘s Department deputies located Holmes and detained him. Modesto police officers arrested him and are conducting the investigation.

Holmes faces a charge of assault with a deadly weapon and remained in custody Monday morning, with bail set at $50,000.
