Driver unhurt in crash into parked car and then classroom at Modesto elementary school

A driver complained of chest pain but refused medical treatment after crashing into a parked car and then into a classroom at Chrysler Elementary School in Modesto early Saturday evening, according to the Modesto fire and police departments.

According to Modesto police Lt. Jason Grogan, the driver was heading east on Brenner Way, which ends in a T-intersection with the school on Conant Avenue.

About 6:30 p.m., the driver struck a parked car and then went north briefly on Conant before leaving the roadway, crossing parking and grassy areas and crashing into the classroom at the northwest front of the school.

The crash initially was reported as a pin-in, Grogan said, but Fire Department Battalion Chief Andrew Hunter said crews found the driver out of the vehicle. The driver, for whom no identifying information was available Sunday morning, was evaluated by medical responders.

The car came to rest fully inside the empty classroom. Hunter said school staff were on scene and would secure the building once the car was removed.

The cause of the crash is under investigation by Modesto Police Department. Grogan said alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors.
