If you love brick, and houses that don’t make a ton of sense, Zillow has a listing in Modesto for you.

A unique, three-bedroom and three-bathroom house, at 1018 W. Morris Ave., was listed for sale Jan. 8 at $639,900. On Feb. 2, the price reduced by $10,000.

On Feb. 12, the described “square house” was posted on a national Facebook page with 1.6 million followers called “Zillow Gone Wild.”

The page highlights homes that have quirky designs, unique architecture and are all-around different. Zillow Gone Wild also has a sub-Reddit, X account, Instagram page, newsletter and, as of 2024, an HGTV show.

The Facebook post of the Morris Avenue house received 705 reactions and 195 comments.

“My primary thought is that at least the big bad wolf could not blow it down,” one comment said.

“I like how the outside is a square but not a single room inside is,” said another.

The original Zillow listing describes the house as “a rare opportunity to own a distinguished, 1940 tri-level residence in the heart of Modesto’s College Area neighborhood.” It’s 2,320 square feet built on a 5,750 square-foot corner lot.

The house was redesigned by Central Valley firm LeavittWeaver, which is “celebrated for innovative, modern designs that blend elemental elegance with artisanal craftsmanship” and “known for transformative residential projects, custom furniture and distinctive commissions, including a Boeing 727 interior,” according to the listing.

It has wrap-around windows, 19 skylights, “ample” storage, potential in-law quarters, a built-in office space, a dining room, an upper-level wet bar and a rooftop deck, the listing says.

A Facebook commenter noted another unique feature.

“Oh good! I was wondering if there was a staircase of death in this house and I’m not disappointed,” the person said.

If this sounds like the house for you, the listing says the seller, who apparently purchased the house in 2021, is motivated.
