Former Big Lots site on Sisk Road in Modesto sees action. What’s moving in?
Just over a year since Big Lots closed on Sisk Road in Modesto, new life is being breathed into the building.
Construction is being done to the exterior and residents are wondering what’s going in the space next. You don’t have to look far to find the answer — literally.
Ashley Homestore, which occupies a unit directly next to the former Big Lots site, will reopen in its new spot by April, an employee confirmed when I called Thursday afternoon. Ashley Homestore has been in its current location since 2017.
Why is it moving? Ashley Homestore’s current location being 19,000 square feet and the former Big Lots footprint being more than 33,000 square feet may have something to do with it.
When I spoke with Modesto Community & Economic Development Director Jessica Hill in June 2024, she said that any deal for what goes into the space would be made between the property owner and the business.
She also said that being in one of the major Modesto shopping centers, the owners likely would want to fill the space quickly and that her department helps facilitate conversations of potential retailers that could go in there.
With that, the next question is: What might eventually replace the old Ashley Homestore once it moves?
We know what residents want, and I wouldn’t hold my breath for a Chick-fil-A.
