Stanislaus County road will close for expressway construction, causing disruptions
Stanislaus County will begin a long-term closure of Terminal Avenue, starting Monday, as construction work continues on the North County Corridor.
According to a project update, Terminal Avenue will be closed to through traffic near Riverbank, between Townsend Avenue and Claribel Road. People on Townsend, Van Dusen, Minniear and Davis avenues will be directly affected. The closure will support critical construction work for the expressway, the county update says.
The county is building a 2.4-mile first phase of the North County Corridor between Oakdale Road and Claus Road, north of Modesto. The Phase I construction, costing $144 million, includes an overcrossing of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad and Terminal Avenue.
Carissa Lucas, a county spokeswoman, said the road closure is expected to last about two years. She said via email that a mailer sent to residents and businesses in the affected area informed them they will still have local access.
The four-lane expressway, east of Roselle Avenue, will bend to the north and have overcrossings at Terminal and the railroad and also for a realignment of Claribel Road.
Another feature of the project is an undercrossing at Roselle Avenue. Roselle has been closed for months, between Claribel and Plainview Road, to allow for an earth-moving operation.
The county is directing motorists traveling north or south on Terminal to use Claus Road as an alternative route during the lengthy road closure. During temporary night closures of Claus Road, drivers can use Oakdale Road as an alternative.
The first phase of the North County Corridor is expected to open in 2028. Traffic delays are expected near construction areas.
The project has a website where people can check for construction updates and request email notices.
