Stanislaus County to close Roselle Avenue for major project beginning Oct. 3
Stanislaus County has set an Oct. 3 date for starting Phase 1 full-scale construction for the North County Corridor, a project to improve east-west traffic flow across the county.
The county announced the work will start with a yearlong closure of Roselle Avenue, just north of Modesto, between Plainview Road and Patterson Road in Riverbank. Some preliminary work began in July.
Crews will build a 2.4-mile section of the expressway, from the intersection of Claribel and Oakdale roads to Claus Road. Starting at the Claribel and Oakdale intersecton, the route will run south on Oakdale for a quarter mile and then eastward across farmland to Claus Road.
The project includes a new Claribel Road alignment joining with Claus Road, across from the former Riverbank ammunition plant, as well as expressway overcrossings at Roselle and the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe railroad. Plans are to complete Phase 1 in 2028.
The $144 million construction project is a partnership of the county, Modesto, Riverbank, Oakdale, the Stanislaus Council of Governments and the California Department of Transportation, with support from state and federal funding. The first phase is part of an 18-mile route from Kiernan Avenue, at Tully Road, to a junction with Highway 120 east of Oakdale, that aims to connect Modesto, Riverbank and Oakdale with a new traffic corridor and reduce congestion.
In a recent news release, the county promised the expressway will be a faster, more reliable route for residents, businesses, trucks and emergency responders.
“We recognize the (Roselle) closure will be a major disruption for many residents and businesses,” county Public Works Director David Leamon said. “We appreciate the community’s patience as we work through this critical phase of construction.”
The county released a map showing detours for northbound and southbound Roselle Avenue traffic, starting Oct. 3, to get around earth-moving activity for building the Roselle overcrossing. Northbound drivers will turn left on Sylvan Avenue, then right on Oakdale, right on Patterson Road and then left on Roselle. Or they can turn right on Sylvan, left on Claus and left on Patterson to return to northbound Roselle.
Southbound traffic on Roselle in Riverbank will be able to turn either way on Patterson and follow the same detours but in the opposite direction.
The county has said closure of Roselle will be the most significant disruption during Phase 1 construction. Other traffic delays are anticipated from time to time, including nighttime closures of Claus Road, closure of Terminal Avenue between Minnear Avenue and Plainview and interruptions on portions of Claribel and Oakdale roads.
The county will inform the public about traffic impacts during the three-year construction project on a website, northcountycorridorphase1.com, and on message boards. A project hot line at 209-217-9616 is for questions and concerns.
