Vegetation fire destroys structure near Riverbank, damages others. Wind was factor
Three structures were damaged in a wind-driven grass fire near Riverbank, including one that was a total loss.
The vegetation fire Wednesday afternoon began in an encampment on the south side of the Stanislaus River and spread upslope to the nearby structures, the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire District said in a post. Windy conditions were a factor.
An old residential structure was destroyed.
More than 35 engines from various agencies, along with two ambulances, responded to the fire in the 4300 block of Highway 108 near Adam’s Gravel Plant Road. One firefighter suffered heat-related symptoms and was taken to a hospital, the fire district said.
The fire was contained to 25 acres. A section of Highway 108, east of Claus Road, was temporarily closed. Fire personnel kept working throughout the night and Thursday, conducting mop-up operations.
There was no information on the cause of the fire.
