Are dogs allowed inside bars in California? Grocery stores?

Under California law, pets are generally not allowed inside food establishments — including restaurants, bars and grocery stores — where food is prepared or sold for human consumption.

However, there are exceptions.

California’s Health and Safety Code allows live animals in food facilities if there’s no risk of contaminating food.

With a business owner’s approval, dogs are allowed in outdoor dining areas — as long as certain health and safety rules are followed.

These include having a separate entrance to the patio, keeping dogs leashed and under control and ensuring pet waste is properly cleaned up.

In addition, employees must wash their hands after handling animals and serve dogs food or water only in single-use disposable containers.
