Where can I find dog-friendly restaurants, coffee shops in Modesto? See top spots
California has clear guidelines for pet owners — including where you can and can’t take your furry companions.
Modesto Bee reader Leslie Shaw Klinger asked our journalists with Bee Curious, a community-driven series where reporters answer reader questions about the Modesto region: “What dog friendly cafes and restaurants are available in Modesto or surrounding areas?”
The Bee reached out to several local businesses to find out if they welcome dogs. Here’s what we found:
Are dogs allowed inside restaurants in California? Grocery stores?
California law generally prohibits pets from entering food facilities, such as restaurants and grocery stores that prepare or sell food for human consumption.
However, there are exceptions.
Under California’s Health and Safety Code, live animals are allowed to enter a food facility if there’s no risk of food contamination.
If a business owner approves, dogs can join their owners in outdoor dining areas — as long as specific health and safety conditions are met, the law says.
These include providing a separate outdoor entrance, properly disposing of pet waste and keeping dogs leashed and under control.
In addition, employees must wash their hands after handling animals and serve dogs food or water only in single-use disposable containers.
