Students across Stanislaus County are counting the days until summer break begins. And while many parents will take vacation days, they’ll get no break from their most important, full-time job: keeping their kids safe and healthy.
To help parents with that, The Modesto Bee will present “Summerproofing Your Kids,” an online panel discussion with three community members who are very familiar with health and safety issues.
They are: Modesto Fire Department Capt. Joseph Spani; Rena Bryant, RN, who is a trauma services injury prevention coordinator and the coordinator of Safe Kids Stanislaus; and Dr. Philip Bauman of Modesto’s Valley Oak Pediatric Associates.
The live Q&A will be held on Thursday, May 22 at 7 p.m. RSVP here and ask a question for the panel.
The three will lend their expertise to a discussion of topics relevant to summertime and kids being out of school. Bee reporter Kathleen Quinn will host the talk, which will include water safety; bike safety: sun, heat and air quality awareness and protection; the importance of using properly fitted bike helmets, life jackets and car safety seats; and more.
Drownings can and do happen in everything from wading pools and swimming pools to reservoirs, canals and rivers, said Bryant, who will address the importance of swim lessons and adult supervision.
She also noted that teen driving safety is even more of an issue in summer, when youth have more time on their hands and may need reminders about making good choices.
The Bee invites questions, which can be submitted here.
