Big Lots is closing more locations across the US. Is Modesto store on the list?
A national retail chain known for home decor and lifestyle products is closing stores across the United States, including one in Modesto.
Big Lots will “commence going-out-of-business sales at all remaining Big Lots store locations in the coming days to protect the value of its estate,” the company said in a Thursday, Dec. 19, news release.
In the release, Big Lots CEO Bruce Thorn said the closures could be reversed if a company sale is completed.
More than 400 Big Lots locations have shut so far in 2024.
What is Big Lots?
Based in Columbus, Ohio, Big Lots describes itself as a destination for affordable brand-name products, from electronics and home decor to toys and seasonal items.
The company was founded in 1967 as Consolidated International, Inc., according to its website.
At least some Big Lots in Stanislaus County and elsewhere once were MacFrugal’s Bargains Closeouts stores. Consolidated bought MacFrugal’s in the late 1990s.
Big Lots founder Sol Shenk was known for “making crazy closeout deals, particularly on auto parts and all kinds of vehicles,” the site said.
Big Lots had about 27,700 employees and more than 1,300 stores in 48 states when it announced in September that it would close locations after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
Big Lots had hoped to stay in business by closing hundreds of unprofitable stores and arranging a $620 million sale to private equity firm Nexus Capital Management
However, the deal did not materialize, Big Lots said in a statement.
The company said it will continue to “serve customers in-store and online and will provide updates as available.”
Where is Big Lots store closing in Modesto area?
In the summer, Big Lots closed more than 300 stores across the United States, including a total of nine locations in the Sacramento area and a store in Atascadero.
On Friday, a total of 21 California locations were listed on Big Lots’ website as being in operation.
These will now close, Big Lots said, although it was unclear exactly when those stores will shut their doors.
Big Lots has one store in Modesto, at 1717 Oakdale Road.
