Editor’s note: This is the fourth in a multi-part series about waste disposal in the Modesto area.
With the holiday season approaching, Modesto businesses and services — from banks to government offices — are preparing for scheduled closures on select dates.
What does that mean for garbage collection? Will the festive season delay trash pickup in Modesto?
Here’s what to keep in mind:
Which holidays will delay garbage pickup in Modesto?
The city of Modesto partners with Gilton Solid Waste Management and Bertolotti Disposal Service to handle all solid waste and recycling collection services, according to the city website.
These haulers only observe four holidays each year:
- New Year’s Day, Jan. 1 (a Wednesday in 2025)
- Independence Day, July 4
- Thanksgiving Day, the fourth Thursday of November
- Christmas Day, Dec. 25 (a Wednesday this year)
When will my garbage be picked up on holidays?
If your trash pickup was delayed during the week following one of these days, this holiday schedule could be the reason.
“These holidays may cause your service to be delayed by one day during the appropriate week,” the city website says.
For example, if your usual pickup day falls on Thanksgiving, which is a Thursday, collection will shift to Friday.
Similarly, if your garbage is normally picked up on Wednesday, your collection day will move to Thursday of that week, and so forth.
