Voting in Stanislaus County? Here’s what we will — and won’t — know on election night
California voters have until Tuesday, Nov. 5, to cast their votes in the 2024 general election.
As local and state officials prepare for Election Day, ballot counting has already begun in Stanislaus County.
You may be wondering what results will be available on election night.
Here’s a look at what we’ll know and when:
How many Stanislaus County votes are counted so far?
Donna Linder, the Stanislaus County Registrar of Voters, said there are more than 290,000 registered voters in the county.
“We get a daily update of ballots received,” Linder said.
As of Wednesday, Oct. 30, she said the county had received about 68,000 ballots.
How long does it take for elections officials to tally results?
After Election Day, Linder said, officials must wait seven days to receive ballots postmarked on or before Election Day.
“We could finish an election in 17 to 20 days historically, but with the new state law, we cannot finish until Dec. 3,” Linder said.
When will local election results be available?
Due to a new state law, Linder said, results for all the races of the general election will be delayed.
Assembly Bill 3184, which was signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom on Sept. 22, amends the California Elections Code to clarify the deadline for voters who need to “cure” their vote-by-mail ballots, typically due to missing or mismatched signatures.
“Typically, the code says their deadline is two days before we certify, which is kind of up in the air,” Linder previously told The Modesto Bee. “So what they’ve done is they’ve created a certification date for all counties throughout the state.”
The certification date for California’s general election results has been set for Dec. 3 to align with the state’s new regulations.
“We will give updated results on election night, and then every Tuesday and Thursday (until Dec. 3), we will release new results,” Linder said.
Stanislaus County residents can view up-to-date election results on the county’s website.
