Central Valley faces dangerous heat for last weekend of Stanislaus County Fair

Excessive heat warning

As the Stanislaus County Fair comes to an end, the hot weather is just getting started.

The fair opened Friday, July 7 amid seasonably mild weather, but the same cannot be said for the fair’s closing weekend. In fact, the National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning for the area from Saturday at 11 a.m. until Sunday at 11 p.m.

“Generally speaking, for an excessive heat warning, we need to see major to extreme heat risk for the majority of the area,” said Sara Purdue, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

Here’s what you can expect to see (and feel) if you’re outside this weekend:

Weekend forecast

In the final three days of the StanCo fair, the weather service is advising Central Valley residents to stay inside between the hours of 1 p.m. and 8 p.m., with the hottest part of the day being between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

“The best time for outdoor activity will be between 4 a.m. and 10 a.m.,” Purdue said. “It’s going to be somewhat cooler. You won’t have to deal with the intensity of the sun at the same time (as the heat).”

The weekend forecast in Modesto, Purdue said, will be:

  • Friday- High of 102; low around 70
  • Saturday- High near 107; low around 74
  • Sunday- High near 108; low around 75

Turlock is facing similar highs, according to the weather service.

Tips to stay cool

Aside from staying inside when possible during the hottest parts of the day, Purdue said the weather service is advising residents in areas with excessive heat warnings this weekend to:

  • Stay hydrated
  • Stay in places with air conditioning if possible
  • Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke
  • Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing
  • Schedule frequent breaks in shaded or air conditioned areas when working outside
