Stanislaus County reopens one lane on traffic artery that was closed by March storms
West Grayson Road is partly open to traffic again after it was closed by high river flow in Stanislaus County.
A one-lane traffic signal is controlling the road section between Shiloh Road and River Road near Grayson, the Stanislaus County Office of Emergency Services said.
County authorities closed West Grayson Road, from Shiloh to River, during the March storms because of water covering half the roadway. Grayson Road is an east-west traffic artery for Stanislaus County, but officials were afraid vehicles coming around a curve at normal speed would hit the water and crash.
“Only one lane is open,” sheriff’s Deputy Raj Singh, a county OES spokesman, said by text Wednesday. “They put in a temporary traffic light that allows traffic to pass.”
The One Stop Market in Grayson was glad to see traffic restored. Owner Sam Obeid said the store had lost customers who use Grayson Road when passing through the area.
“The lane is open, that is the main thing,” Obeid said. “When it was closed, it was bad for the business.”
Laird Park, off West Grayson Road, is still closed. Eight other road closures in the county caused by flooding or heavy storm runoff last month remain in effect.
