Motorcyclist killed in collision in front of Memorial Medical Center in Modesto
A motorcyclist was killed in a collision with a car Saturday night on Coffee Road in front of Memorial Medical Plaza and Memorial Medical Center.
The crash happened about 6:30 p.m., according to a Modesto Fire Department incident summary. It said an engine crew began lifesaving efforts on the rider.
Though the crash was yards away from the hospital, “the motorcycle obviously doesn’t protect you as much as a car” and the man was pronounced dead at the scene, said police Lt. Joe Bottoms. The lieutenant did not immediately have any other identifying information on the victim. The driver of the involved white sedan remained on scene and was cooperative.
Prior to the crash, the motorcyclist was northbound on Coffee and the sedan driver was southbound.
Bottoms had no information on the investigation into the circumstances of the crash, but a Fire Department photo shows the sedan with impact damage on its passenger side. That suggests that the vehicles did not strike head-on but that the driver of the car may have been making a left turn.
This was the third fatal collision of the year in the city, Bottoms said. “At this time last year, there were five fatals.”
The morning of Feb. 8, Modesto resident Ronald Swindle, 68, was killed in a hit-and-run while crossing Yosemite Avenue near Santa Ana Avenue.
And on the night of Jan. 17, 65-year-old Modesto resident Nancy Wright was killed in a hit-and-run near Prescott Road and Standiford Avenue.
She was struck by a white GMC Yukon SUV, police said, and witnesses then helped officers find the alleged driver a few blocks away from the scene.
