A driver was killed early Sunday in a head-on collision just east of Keyes, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The two-vehicle crash happened about 1:10 a.m. on Keyes Road east of Pioneer Road.

The driver of a 2008 Mazda3 was eastbound on Keyes Road at an “unknown but high rate of speed,” according to a CHP news release.

The male driver veered into the westbound lane, directly into the path of 2017 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Ceres resident Richard John Agresti, 31.

Agresti was not able to make an evasive movement, the CHP reported, and the front of the Mazda struck the left front of the Chevy.

The news release does not state whether the Mazda driver was wearing his seat belt, but he was ejected from the vehicle and landed on the road.

The Silverado came to rest in an orchard along Keyes Road. The CHP said Agresti suffered major injuries, including a laceration to his head.

The Mazda driver suffered head trauma and was declared dead at the scene.

The investigation has yet to determine if drugs or alcohol factored in the crash.

Positive identification of the Mazda driver had not been made as of Sunday morning, so his age and place of residence were unavailable.
