Pedestrian fatally struck by car west of Turlock identified

California Highway Patrol

A 38-year-old man who was fatally struck by a vehicle west of Turlock last week has been identified by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office as Jose Mendez-Alonzo.

He died Wednesday when he was struck by an eastbound Chrysler PT Cruiser on West Main Street, west of Crows Landing Road, just before 2 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. Mendez-Alonzo died at the scene.

It was dark and the driver of the PT Cruiser told investigators she did not see Mendez-Alonzo until it was too late, authorities said. She stopped at the scene, was evaluated by officers and determined not to be under the influence.

What Mendez-Alonzo was doing at the time of the collision remains under investigation.
