Pedestrian dies in collision on rural road west of Turlock

A 38-year-old man died early Wednesday morning when he was hit by a vehicle on a rural road west of Turlock.

Just before 2 a.m., the man was in the eastbound lane of West Main Street, west of Crows Landing Road, when he was hit by a Chrysler PT Cruiser, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Ming Hsu.

He said it was dark and the driver of the PT Cruiser, 41-year-old Maiyra Rodriguez of Winton, reported she did not see the man in the road until it was too late. She immediately pulled over and called 911, Hsu said.

A Stanislaus County sheriff’s deputy was the first to arrive at the scene and started CPR on the pedestrian, who had suffered massive head trauma and did not have a pulse. CHP officers who arrived next took over CPR until paramedics got to the scene, but the man ultimately was pronounced dead.

His name was not released by authorities late Wednesday morning because his family had not yet been notified.

The crash remains under investigation. Hsu said it is unknown what the pedestrian was doing prior to the collision, whether he was attempting to cross the street or if he was walking or standing in the traffic lane.
