Man killed, woman badly injured in collision west of Turlock, CHP reports

A Modesto man was killed and an Oakdale woman suffered major injuries in a collision west of Turlock on Monday night.

Russell Bennett, 33, was driving a Chevrolet east on Monte Vista Avenue just after 11 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

He failed to stop at the stop sign at Carpenter Road and was hit by a southbound Nissan, which didn’t have a stop sign, the CHP said.

The right front of the Nissan hit the left front of the Chevrolet, which overturned an unknown number of times.

Bennett, who was not wearing a seat belt, and his passenger, 25-year-old Danielle Harder, who was belted, were both ejected from the Chevrolet. Bennett died at the scene and Harder was taken to a hospital with major injuries.

The driver of the Nissan, 44-year-old Victor Flores Barrera of Modesto, was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

Drugs and/or alcohol are suspected to be factors in the collision, the CHP said.
