Organizers of the annual count of homeless people in Stanislaus County need as many as 250 volunteers to help with the latest tally, which takes place Jan. 27.

Volunteers need to be at least 18 years old and complete a volunteer/safety training class. People can register to become a volunteer at stanislaus.pointintime.info. You can also register by calling 209-558-2961 or emailing csoc@stancounty.com.

The deadline to register is Jan. 7.

These annual counts are conducted on behalf of the Stanislaus Community System of Care, whose members include local governments, nonprofit organizations and homeless service providers.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development requires these counts as part of receiving HUD homeless funding. Last year’s count tallied a record 2,927 homeless men, women and children throughout Stanislaus County and its cities.

Volunteers will work with the county’s homeless outreach and engagement team as they ask homeless people to complete a survey as well as give homeless people care packages.

These counts help local service providers tailor services to the homeless people they help and raise awareness about homelessness.
