Fire badly damages home near downtown Modesto, displaces one

A man was displaced Monday by a fire that badly damaged his home near downtown Modesto, according to the Modesto Fire Department.

The fire broke out at a rear residence behind a main house in the 700 block of Fourth Street around 10:30 a.m.

Modesto Fire crews arrived on scene and found heavy smoke coming from the house.

Crews made “an aggressive attack” and extinguished the fire before it spread to the house at the front of the property, according to Battalion Chief Ed Bartley.

Crews remained on scene to assist with salvage of property and the Red Cross was requested to assist the man who lived in the home.

The fire caused an estimated $100,000 in damage to the structure and its contents, Bartley said. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
