Names of Note: Foster Farms donates turkeys. Modesto hospital worker aids same cause
Foster Farms delivered about 500 turkeys Friday to a food bank in Manteca, part of a three-state effort for people in need.
The turkeys went to the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Greater Valley, along with stuffing and other items for about 8,000 meals. The nonprofit serves Stanislaus, San Joaquin and adjacent mountain counties.
The Livingston-based poultry company is in the 14th year of donating food for the holidays. The past two have happened amid a COVID-19 pandemic.
“At Foster Farms, we remain dedicated to fighting hunger in our local communities and are proud to continue our tradition of donating Thanksgiving turkeys, especially this year, as families return to more traditional Thanksgiving celebrations,” said Ira Brill, vice president of communications, in a news release.
The company processes all of its turkeys in Turlock and has chicken plants in several West Coast and Southern states. Friday’s delivery was part of about 64,000 pounds of turkeys bound for nine food banks in California, Oregon and Washington.
An estimated 42 million people across the nation are vulnerable to hunger, according to Feeding America, a network of food banks.
Foster Farms urges residents to make their own donations to Second Harvest and the other recipients:
- Merced County Food Bank
Central California Food Bank, serving Fresno and nearby counties
San Francisco-Marin Food Bank
San Francisco City Impact
Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank
Oregon Food Bank, Portland
Northwest Harvest, Seattle
