At least one dead in multiple-vehicle pileup on Highway 108 in Sonora, CHP reports

At least one person died Saturday in a fiery wreck involving multiple vehicles in Tuolumne County, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The wreck, first reported at 5:38 p.m., occurred on Highway 108 near Lower Mono Way just east of the Crossroads Shopping Center in Sonora.

Two vehicles caught fire. One went 80 feet down an embankment and another 50 feet off the roadway, the CHP reported.

A coroner was called to the scene a short time later.

The wreck occurred in the westbound lanes, according to mymotherlode.com. That section of roadway was closed for several hours.

There was no other immediate information on injuries.
