A 25-year-old Ceres man died early Thursday morning after crashing the classic car he was driving on Kiernan Avenue.

The crash occurred around 4 a.m. when a westbound Honda sedan slowed for a red light at Tully Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Behind the Honda was a 1973 Datsun coupe driven by the 25-year-old, who failed to slow down in time and rear-ended the Honda, the CHP said.

About one minute after that collision, another westbound vehicle failed to stop in time and hit the back of the Datsun.

The Datsun driver was not wearing a seat belt and suffered major injuries in the collision, according to the CHP. He was taken to Doctors Medical Center, where he later died of his injuries. He is believed to have sustained the fatal injuries in the first crash, according to the CHP.

He was identified by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office on Thursday afternoon as 25-year-old Andrew Avalos. The CHP originally reported he was from Modesto but the Coroner’s Office said he was from Ceres.

The drivers of the other two vehicles were not injured.
