Modesto mayor to give his second State of the City Address in March
Modesto Mayor Ted Brandvold is scheduled to give his State of the City Address next month at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in downtown.
Though these typically are annual events for mayors, this will be Brandvold’s second address since taking office four years ago.
He delivered his first last May, giving a speech before a receptive audience that went down like comfort food, with none of the periodic heartburn that has marked City Council meetings during his tenure.
Brandvold at a recent council meeting acknowledged that he “got a little bit of criticism for being too positive” during his first State of the City Address but said he again will stress the positive and also talk about some of the city’s challenges, including rising pension costs, homelessness and vagrancy, and maintaining the city’s urban forest.
“We have numerous accomplishments to be proud of,” he said at the Jan. 28 meeting when he talked about his second State of the City Address, adding they can be found among the council, city staff and residents.
The State of the City Address is scheduled for March 26 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the DoubleTree’s grand ballroom. The Chamber of Commerce is hosting the luncheon.
The luncheon costs $40 per person, but residents who just want to hear the mayor speak can attend at no cost. The chamber asks everyone register at www.modchamber.org/event/state-of-the-city-luncheon.
Brandvold is running for his second and final term as mayor in the November election.
He faces several challengers including Councilman Doug Ridenour, Big Valley Grace Community Church senior pastor Rick Countryman and Naramsen Goriel, one of the founders of Indivisible Stanislaus, part of a national effort to elect progressives, enact progressive polices and oppose the Trump administration.
