Original story:

An 80-year-old Newman woman died Tuesday afternoon in a crash with a big rig just outside of town.

The crash was on Hills Ferry Road, west of River Road, at about 1:30 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

The woman, whose name was not released, was driving west in a Toyota when for unknown reasons her car partially entered the eastbound lane as the big rig approached.

The front left sides of both vehicles collided. The driver of the big rig, Ruben Martinez, 51, of Modesto, lost control and the rig ended up hitting an electrical pole on the north shoulder, according to the CHP.

The driver of the Toyota died at the scene. Martinez was taken to Memorial Medical Center with moderate injuries.

Alcohol and/or drugs do not appear to be a factor in the collision, according to the CHP.
