The Newman woman who died in a crash with a big rig Tuesday afternoon has been identified as 80-year-old Katherine Ledford.

Ledford was driving a Toyota west on Hills Ferry Road, just outside Newman, when for unknown reasons she drifted into oncoming traffic.

The left front of the Toyota crashed with the left front of a big rig in the eastbound lane.

Ledford died at the scene.

After the collision with the Toyota the big rig hit an electrical pole on the north shoulder. The driver, 51-year-old Ruben Martinez, of Modesto, suffered moderate injuries.

Editor’s note: An earlier story misidentified the Newman woman’s gender.
