Modesto police get help cleaning up under Dry Creek bridge. It's a lot of trash.

The Modesto Police Department, with help of workers from several other agencies, cleared out about 10 tons of trash from under the Dry Creek bridge at Yosemite/Morton on Friday.

The trash was apparently left behind by the homeless.

Agencies involved included Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department, Stanislaus Probation, Modesto Fire Department, and the Homeless Engagement and Response Team (HEART), according to a post on the Modesto Police Department's Facebook page.

Trash left behind from homeless camps can get into the river and affect the ecosystem, including wildlife, according to Sgt. Mike Hammond.

According to this letter to the editor, about 3 tons of garbage was removed from Dry Creek parks in September.
