Stanislaus County announces sixth and seventh deaths related to coronavirus

Stanislaus County’s death toll from the coronavirus pandemic rose to seven, as public health officials reported a man and woman with underlying health conditions had died.

In an update Monday, Turlock Nursing and Rehabilitation Center reported the deaths of two former residents who had tested positive for COVID-19.

“One of our former residents passed away earlier today, whereas the other former resident passed away last week,” the center said in the notice on its website. “On behalf of the entire team at Turlock Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, we mourn with these families as they deal with the loss of their loved ones.”

The nursing home did not release the ages or gender of the two former residents or disclose where they died. Citing patient privacy, the county Health Services Agency said in a news release it would release no further details on the county’s sixth and seventh deaths from coronavirus.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in Stanislaus County rose to 312. Recent increases in the county’s caseload have reflected an increase in available testing and an outbreak at Turlock Nursing and Rehabilitation on East Tuolumne Road. A total of 51 people at the nursing home — 34 residents and 17 staff members — have tested positive for COVID-19; about 200 test results for patients and staff are pending.

The county health department urged the public to continue with social distancing to keep the contagious respiratory illness from spreading.

“As we continue to see more cases, it is critical that individuals and organizations take action in slowing the spread of the virus by following applicable guidance and recommendations. The measures include staying 6 feet away from others; not holding social visits or play dates with people outside your household; and only leaving home for groceries or medical supplies or to work for an essential business.

The health agency advised people to wear face masks when out in public. Hand-washing and use of sanitizers also is recommended.

Turlock Mayor Amy Bublak, in a video Monday regarding the coronavirus, said she was aware the state health department was investigating the cases at Turlock Nursing and Rehabilitation and how they occurred.

The nursing home disclosed last week that three staff members and three residents had tested positive. The number of cases skyrocketed over the weekend as test results were returned.
