Which fruits and veggies are in season this spring?
According to the California Farmers’ Market Association, a variety of fruits and vegetables are in season at springtime.
“Often fruits and vegetables were picked just hours before the farmers’ market opens, and have traveled less than fruits and vegetables traveling through the conventional wholesale channel to the grocery stores,” the association said on its website.
From March through April, you’ll find asparagus, oranges, avocados, lemons and strawberries at farmers markets across the state.
In May, peas, peaches, cherries, blueberries, blackberries, boysenberries, apricots and grapes come into season.
“The fruit offered at farmers’ markets is sweeter because it has higher sugar content because it has ripened on a tree instead of a truck/train or shelf,” the association said.
According to California Grown, certain produce is available year-round at farmers markets, including artichokes, beets, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, lettuce, mushrooms, onions, prunes, radishes and sweet potatoes.
Which flowers are for sale at California farmers markets?
According to Killdeer Farms, a West Sacramento farm, “local farmers markets are about to be overflowing with beautiful, unexpected options.”
“While imported blooms are flying in by the hundreds of millions this time of year, local flowers are fresh, in season and grown right here,” the farm said in an Instagram post. “They last longer, smell better, and feel a lot more like Sacramento.”
Flower offerings vary by season, according to the Sonora Certified Farmers’ Market.
In March, you can find ranunculus, calla lilies and tulips across markets in California.
By April, roses, lilacs, lavender and peonies start to appear.
As temperatures rise in May, tuberose, sunflowers, zinnias and other summer blooms make their debut.
