Two California state offices close after workers take coronavirus tests

Caltrans planned to close an office in Oakland on Monday after an employee there tested positive for COVID-19, according to a Sunday night email.

Separately, the California Public Employees’ Retirement System closed its Sacramento headquarters for cleaning Monday after an employee there showed symptoms and went home. The employee tested negative for COVID-19, a CalPERS spokeswoman said Tuesday.

The Caltrans office was planning to deep-clean its District 4 headquarters and potentially reopen it Thursday, according to the email from district Director Tony Tavares.

“This email is to notify you that you have potentially been exposed to COVID-19 and you should contact your local public health department for guidance and any possible actions to take based on individual circumstances,” Tavares said in the email.

Tavares sent the email at about 8:45 p.m., hours after Gov. Gavin Newsom held an afternoon news conference with updates on the state’s efforts to curb the spread of coronavirus.

Newsom said his administration was still developing guidance for state departments on working amid the pandemic and would announce something more specific Tuesday.

A week ago CalHR director Eraina Ortega sent an email to state government departments with guidance on whether workers that may receive administrative time off or be considered for a telework agreement if they are quarantined under a public health department’s orders.

Newsom said Sunday that the state’s guidance for workers will be based on whether they are defined as “essential” or “nonessential.”

The Caltrans email said “all staff who have been identified as essential function personnel shall telework or report to an identified alternate location,” while other workers would telework if “operationally feasible.”

The email said the workers should be prepared to return to the office on Thursday.
