Man accused of ‘escalating’ crimes may have just kidnapped a woman, CA cops say

Lassen County officials are looking for a man they believe kidnapped a California woman, sheriff’s officials said Monday.

Maitlin Carpenter, 41, went to a Susanville home Monday morning and left with 25-year-old Dorothie Janaybean Crosby, the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. Carpenter is known to “frequent the Reno and Sacramento areas,” officials said.

He is considered armed and dangerous. In March 2018, Carpenter was wanted in connection with a kidnapping at gunpoint and rape, KCRA reported.

“He’s what we would consider a career criminal,” Lassen County Sheriff’s Capt. Kevin Jones told KOLO in 2018. “And his crimes are escalating each time he commits, and they’re becoming more and more dangerous.”

The bail on Carpenter’s rape and kidnapping charges was set at $1 million, KOLO reported in 2018. He was also wanted for making terrorist threats, according to KOLO.
