Stanislaus economic output hits record $22 billion. How does it compare with others?

Stanislaus County hit a record $21.96 billion in economic output in 2021, up 3.7% from the previous year, a federal agency reported Thursday.

The Bureau of Economic Analysis released its annual tally of gross domestic product in the nation’s 3,143 counties. It accounts for goods and services across all sectors — housing, agriculture, health care, manufacturing and more.

The Stanislaus figure topped its previous record of $21.57 billion in 2019, the last year before the COVID-19 pandemic. The data is adjusted for inflation.

The county has risen in most years over the past two decades and is up 39% from the $15.76 billion in 2001. The housing crash of 2008 led to a lull of about five years.

Manufacturing accounted for about two-fifths of the 2021 gain over 2020. Dining and lodging were about a quarter of it. Smaller shares went to professional services, finance and real estate, health and social services, construction, government and information services. Trucking/warehousing, education and retail trade were flat.

The report does not break out farming. An earlier report from the county agricultural commissioner showed $3.55 billion in gross income in 2021, up 2%. It does not account for the ripple effect to businesses that process the raw goods or supply the farmers.

The BEA is part of the U.S. Department of Commerce. It reported earlier that the nation’s output stood at about $23 trillion in 2021, up 5.71%. California was at $2.87 trillion, up 7.5%. Other highlights:

  • San Joaquin County: $30.18 billion, up 6%

  • Merced: $8.98 billion, down 1%

  • Tuolumne: $2.23 billion, up 2%
  • Los Angeles County topped the nation at $711.9 billion, up 8%.
