Amazon starts hiring for 3,000 seasonal jobs in Modesto area ahead of retail holiday rush

Amazon has announced the start of its holiday hiring, including 3,000 positions in the Modesto-Stockton-Sacramento area.

Amazon has kicked off the holiday hiring season with the announcement of its plan to employ 20,000 seasonal workers across the state, including 3,000 jobs in the Modesto-Stockton-Sacramento regions.

As the company bulks up its workforce for the busy shopping season, it’s also finalizing the opening of the new fulfillment center in Turlock, which has been under construction since last year. The million-square-foot warehouse is expected to employ some 1,000 workers once it is running at full capacity.

The internet retailer’s holiday hiring spree will include full- and part-time positions in fulfillment and delivery. Last month, the company announced it would raise the average starting wage for most of its frontline warehouse and transportation workers to $19 an hour.

Starting wages for the Turlock positions have not been released, but a news release about the holiday hiring said most seasonal jobs will begin at more than $19 an hour as well.

Amazon said area cities with open seasonal positions will include the Modesto area, Stockton, Livermore, Fresno and Sacramento. A search of available seasonal jobs in the region this week showed spots in Stockton and Tracy. Starting wages were listed as $18.25 and $20.25, respectively.

The holiday hiring in California is among the 150,000 workers it is expected to employ across the country to help with the seasonal rush. The company said seasonal workers will be given opportunities to transition to full-time, permanent jobs after the holidays.

“Those who choose to stay with us will find a lot of opportunities to grow their careers, whether they take advantage of our free college tuition programs or seek out promotions across our network — this year alone, more than 20,000 frontline employees received promotions,” said John Felton, Amazon’s senior vice president of Worldwide Operations, in the seasonal hiring announcement.

Bass Pro Shops to host job fair

Amazon isn’t the only major retailer to begin its holiday hiring spree. Bass Pro Shops is hosting a nationwide holiday hiring event Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 12 and 13.

The event will include a job fair at the Manteca store.

Applicants are invited to walk in from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. both days, or apply beforehand by visiting basspro.com/careers.

The fishing, sporting and outdoor recreation retailer plans to hire for some 3,500 seasonal part- and full-time positions nationally over its two-day hiring event. That includes 20 at the Manteca store, a company spokesperson said.
