CHP update: Three were killed in fiery north Modesto crash

Two additional fatalities were confirmed by the California Highway Patrol on Monday as results of a fiery crash Friday night in north Modesto.

A 2000 Jaguar and a 2003 Honda CR-V collided at Tully Road and Kiernan Avenue just before midnight, the CHP said.

Both vehicles caught fire and three people in the Honda died. The Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office had not released the names of those involved Monday morning.

According to a CHP news release, the Jaguar was traveling at an unsafe speed and crashed into the back of the Honda, which was stopped in the No. 1 lane eastbound on Kiernan. The force of the impact caused the Jaguar to lodge beneath the rear of the Honda, and both vehicles caught fire.

The driver of the Jaguar ran away. The driver’s identity is still unknown.

The driver and two passengers of the Honda were unable to escape the vehicle and succumbed to the flames, the CHP said.

The three were pronounced dead at the scene.

It is unknown if alcohol and/or drugs were a contributing factor to the crash.

The crash is still under investigation, and officials ask anyone with information to call Officer J. Box at 209-545-7440.
