Fiery crash leaves one dead in north Modesto

One person is dead after a vehicle accident in north Modesto late Friday night.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a 2000 Jaguar and a 2003 Honda CR-V collided at Tully Road and Kiernan Avenue just before midnight.

Both vehicles caught fire, with the heat so intense a license plate of one of the vehicles melted.

Officer Justin Montooth of the California Highway Patrol said Saturday morning that one person fled the vehicle. He has not been located, although he said authorities believe they know who he is.

The collision appeared to have occurred when one vehicle rear-ended another, according to a witness.

Montooth did not know which vehicle the fatal victim was found in. The identity of that person will be released after family has been notified.
