Monday Spotlight: Modesto's Silvermoon Band
In Monday Spotlight, we share information about and highlight members of the regional arts and entertainment community.
This week, we spotlight a band that continues to make a mark on the region’s music scene.
Name: Silvermoon Band. Members are Barry Day on drums/vocals, Rick Barnes on guitar/vocals, Ken Daniel on bass/vocals and Lori Salsa on vocals.
Home base: Modesto
What you do: Old-time rock ’n’ roll. It’s still about people having a good time. Let’s dance!
How you knew: Silvermoon Band formed in Modesto in 1976. Day fell in love with rhythms and drum beats at a very early age – 10 or 12 years old. He started on the piano, moved to sax and ended up on the drums. He said it was always very easy to keep time. Back then everyone played guitar, so he thought he’d play the drums. In 2016 Silvermoon Band celebrates its 40th year.
Go ahead, brag: Silvermoon Band played two USO tours, one in Japan and Korea in 1977 and one in Spain and Italy in 1980. Both involved playing to more than 50,000 military troops. The band has performed on bills with the likes of Alabama, George Strait, Emmylou Harris and more. The group also played the Stanislaus Cancer Chili Cook-Off in Turlock for eight straight years in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Other charitable work includes organizing a Flood Aid concert in in 1997 that raised $19,200 for flood victims and a concert for the American Red Cross in 2001 that raised $9,800 for victims of Sept. 11.
Check you out: Silvermoon Band & Friends will play a special benefit, “Teddy Bear Toss” show, Feb. 13 at Rivet’s American Grill in Modesto. All the teddy bears will be donated to Sutter/Memorial Hospital and the Stanislaus Sheriff’s Department.
