Dick's House of Sport will open its first California store in San Diego

Would you host your next birthday party or teambuilding retreat at a sporting goods store?

A new twist on a legacy brand hopes you will.

Dick’s House of Sport, the next-generation sporting goods store from Dick’s Sporting Goods, plans to open its first California store in Mission Valley. It has already opened its new style, immersive store in 22 states.

The store is anticipated to open in spring 2027, a spokesperson said.

The 158,000-square-foot store will land in The Valley, the mall that was formerly named Westfield Mission Valley and is amid a redevelopment. The store will open in the building once occupied by Macy’s.

"We are creating a modern, dynamic retail experience that pulses with energy and creativity, giving visitors compelling opportunities to connect, and more reasons to visit, linger. eat and shop," Todd Majcher, an executive vice president with Lowe and Retail Capital Solutions, the mall’s owner, in partnership with Real Capital Solutions, since 2023, said in a news release. "Dick’s House of Sport will amplify that spirit with the wealth of delightful new experiences it will offer guests at the newly renamed Mission Valley shopping center, which will now be called The Valley."

What athletes will find at Dick’s House of Sport:

  • Birthday parties and hosted events. “You take care of the invite list, we'll handle the rest,” the website says.
  • Services like baseball glove steaming and custom shaping, bike tune-ups and customizations, and a long menu of assistance to golfers, including tuning, fitting, a 24-hour regripping guarantee, repairs and adjustments.
  • Experiences including climbing walls, golf bays with simulators, space to run and try out shoes, and multi-sport cages that “give athletes an opportunity to try product while measuring and tracking their performance.”

The company is hiring a store director for this location, with a pay range of $127,000 to $237,800. Desired qualifications include “Passionate about bringing confidence and excitement to our Athletes” and “7-10 years experience in Store Operations, Community Marketing or Project Management.”

The company has seven Dick’s stores in San Diego County. The nearest to Mission Valley is in Point Loma, on Sports Arena Boulevard.
