Is a boxed Cabernet Sauvignon for $160 a deal? Modesto wine columnist offers a look

Tribune News Service

A leading producer of Paso Robles wines has released a new three-liter boxed edition of its 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon. The winery, My Favorite Neighbor, is piloting this project to explore alternative and sustainable packaging for premium wines. The box holds the equivalent of four bottles of wine and the MFN 2021 Cabernet costs $160. This is a substantial savings compared to buying four bottles at the regular price of $55 per bottle. The 2020 vintage of My Favorite Neighbor Cabernet was rated 95 points by The Wine Advocate.

The 2021 My Favorite Neighbor Cabernet Sauvignon (San Luis Obispo County) is composed of Cabernet (83%), Petit Verdot (7%), Malbec (7%), Petite Syrah (2%) and Syrah (1%), and aged for 18 months in 55 percent new French oak barrels. A total of 300 units were produced, equivalent to 100 cases of wine. The boxed edition of the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is now available on a direct-to-consumer basis at MyFavoriteNeighbor.com.

Perfect wine tasting walk

The Navigator expertly directed us to Paso Robles in June where I had to judge wines and she had to shop. We stayed an extra night and enjoyed another great meal with music in the park. Our big surprise was that now there are 30 wine tasting rooms downtown. Park your car, walk, taste, walk, taste, eat and then repeat. Also consider a nap in the park.

Nearby, Peachy Canyon Winery was the Winery of the Year in the 2023 Central Coast Wine Competition. Of their 17 entries they won one Best of Class, one Double Gold, nine Golds and six Silver medals. Cheers to Paso’s Peachy Canyon.

The Ragtag Wine Company

I wrote about Ragtag’s wine maker Jeff Husky scoring a Double Gold (95) for his 2022 Rose in the current Sunset Wine Competition. This falls in line with what he accomplished in his first two vintages with Ragtag. They included six Best of Class, two Best of AVA, 14 Double Gold Medals, two Platinum Medals and 18 Gold Medals. Ragtag Wine Company is on the SLO Coast Urban Wine Trail. Reserve a winery visit or check out the tasting room at 779 Higuera St. in San Luis Obispo. Join their active wine club and enjoy the excellent discounts at ragtagwineco.com.
