Modesto native set to open Napa Valley wine tasting room in the spring
Modesto native Mathew Bruno will unveil his first-ever tasting room in the spring of 2022. The new tasting destination will be in an elegant historic Queen Anne Victorian in Rutherford, built in 1894.
The extensive restoration of the entire property is ongoing and when finished, guests will be able to relax in lounge areas both indoors and out. The grounds will have welcoming gardens with water features and bocce courts with a spectacular view of Napa Valley vineyards.
Bruno was introduced to wine at an early age, sharing lunches with his Italian grandparents. After graduation from Beyer High School, where he was a three-sport athlete, he furthered his education at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. His father, Matt, was instrumental in his wine education and fostered his appreciation of fine wine. After completing a master’s degree in business administration, Bruno, along with his father and brother Tony, was determined to take his passion for great wine to another level.
In searching for Napa Valley fruit, Bruno was reacquainted with Stephens Moody, a childhood classmate and a member of those Beyer High teams. Moody was an accomplished second generation winemaker. This chance encounter brought together two enthusiastic friends with a vision for a premium wine program. In 2009, Moody signed on to join the Mathew Bruno Wines team.
Bruno’s philosophy is simple: exceptional fruit from exceptional vineyards, crafted by two exceptional winemakers, Moody and Dr. Nichola Hall. And voila, award-winning wines. The winery has garnered accolades for its single vineyard 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, along with Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Rose. The portfolio of prestigious vineyards includes Stagecoach, Beckstoffer’s To Kalon, Baldacci Family’s Honey Bee in Carneros, Hoxsey Family’s Block House in Yountville and Sun Chase on the Sonoma Coast.
The Rutherford home will offer the full line of Mathew Bruno Wines wines along with very limited special pours and cheese pairings. The address is 1151 Rutherford Road and updates will be shared on mathewbruno.com/visit.
What’s On Our Table
The Steal this week is the 2020 Five Reasons Syrah Rose from Chile’s Valle Central. It has red fruit aromas, medium body and a crisp dry finish, and is only $3.99 at the Grocery Outlet. There are two Deals this week. The first is the 2020 Bogle Sauvignon Blanc. This is one of my go-to best value white wines with an SRP of $9, sale priced around $7 and available in most markets. Number two is the 2019 Parducci Winery True Grit Reserve Petite Sirah. It is deep, dark, inky, full bodied and it’ll put a layer of purple haze on your chops. The SRP is $20 and a deal at Costco for $13.49. Cheers!
