A Waterford church is inviting the public to experience the joy of giving later this month as they pack shoeboxes with items for the world’s most needy children.

The Operation Christmas Child community packing party will gather locals to help fill the boxes with school supplies, hygiene items and toys on Nov. 18 at First Southern Baptist Church of Waterford.

The goal is to fill more than 500 shoeboxes – part of what’s expected to be 10,000 shoebox gifts collected this year in Stanislaus County. The boxes will be sent by worldwide effort Operation Christmas Child to children affected by war, disease, disaster, poverty and famine, according to a press release from the organization’s Stanislaus County Area Team.

“This event is a great opportunity to come together as a community and give back in such a simple and powerful way,” Heidi Partlow, Operation Christmas Child coordinator for Central California, said in the release.

All are invited to join the packing party, which also will feature refreshments, a photo booth and videos of shoebox recipients from around the world.

Participants also can donate $9 per shoebox gift online through “Follow Your Box” and receive a tracking label to follow its destination. Another option is to go to samaritanspurse.org/buildonline to select gifts matched to a child’s age and gender, then add a photo and personal note to their virtual shoebox.

Operation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritan’s Purse, an international Christian relief and evangelism organization. Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child has delivered more than 146 million gift-filled shoeboxes to children in more than 160 countries and territories, according to the release.

The packing party will begin at 9 a.m. on Nov. 18 at First Southern Baptist Church of Waterford, 116 E St.
