Everything in Moderation this Holiday Season?
We often hear the phrase “everything in moderation,” but what does that really mean? And can we stay healthy following that old adage?
Can we use this advice to stave off weight gain?
The word moderation means “avoiding extremes of behavior or expression; observing reasonable limits.” Each person may have a different idea of what is “extreme” and what is “reasonable,” but for this article I’m using feedback from a recent weight management group I worked with.
In the table at right are some examples of the calories in different amounts of special holiday indulgences.
All the holiday treats can really add up fast. Keep in mind that consuming an extra 500 calories per day can cause us to gain a pound of weight in a week. Even if we indulge in just two or three small items, we will consume a lot of extra calories over the season and end up with some extra weight by the time we ring in the new year.
So, what do you think? Maybe we’d better keep it to just a couple of very special treats in moderation, and pass up everything else. Remember, although many special foods are associated with the holidays; so are special times and traditions with family and friends. Enjoy all the special things about the season. Take the focus off of the food. With that strategy, you’re sure to ring in 2017 feeling healthier and happier.
