Joan Sebastian
Mexican superstar Joan Sebastian comes to the Gallo Center for the Arts on the heels of the sold-out show by fellow Spanish-language hit-maker Pepe Aguilar. The pop, ranchera and grupera singer has been a staple on the charts since he came on the scene in 1977. Known as “The Poet of Juliantla,” his hometown, Sebastian has won seven Latin Grammy Awards and four Grammy Awards. He also has crossed over into acting and in 1996 starred in the Mexican television hit soap opera “Tú y Yo” (“You and I”). The Modesto tour date came together last-minute after a stop in Bakersfield fell through.

Surrealism in Jazz
The Carnegie Arts Center continues its fall jazz concerts with the Surrealism in Jazz Improvisation show. The concert will feature the Joe Mazzaferro Septet. Mazzaferro is a performer and educator who has performed with the likes of Wycliffe Gordon, Jeff Clayton, Ingrid Jensen, Lewis Nash and more. He teaches at California State University, Stanislaus, where he is the coordinator of jazz studies and directs the Jazz Ensemble.

‘Oliver!’
Yes, sir, you may have some more “Oliver!” The 1968 musical adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic novel is presented by the Modesto Film Society. The film won five Academy Awards, including best picture, best director and best score. Local musician Kyle Barker will present a prefilm organ concert, and those attending are encouraged to dress like a character from the film.

Manteca Kindred Arts
The Farallon Quintet will perform as the Manteca Kindred Arts continues its new season. The Bay Area group was founded in 2012 and consists of a string quartet plus a clarinet. The quintet’s musicians are principal players in various orchestras, including the San Francisco Ballet, Santa Rosa, Silicon Valley, Marin, Berkeley, Monterey, Modesto and Sacramento Philharmonic. The group takes its name from the Farallon Islands, off the coast of San Francisco.

St. James Concert Series
These hills are alive with the sound of music by area composers. The St. James Concert Series presents its Composers’ Corner featuring a program full of works written by local musicians. Five artists from Tuolumne and Calaveras counties will present their original works. Performing will be area musicians Ronald Randall, Pamela Brown, Joy Willow, Patti Hennessee and Daryl Hollinger.

Brad Williams
Comic Brad Williams brings his humor to Black Oak Casino. The funnyman has appeared on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and opened for Carlos Mencia on tour for five years. Williams, who has dwarfism, has a full-length comedy album called “Coming Up Short.”
