In brief: Arts events across the Modesto region

Area church and community choirs will come together for the Better Together benefit choir concert Saturday.

The event will include close to a dozen area choirs performing together to help local food banks. Choirs from area Catholic, Latter-day Saints, Episcopalian, Baptist and other churches, as well as the River Lights Chorus, Swiss Echoes and Golden Valley Chorus will take part, among others. The Central Valley Youth Auto Harp Ensemble will also take part.

Event organizer Marilyn Heiner said the show will include individual choir and member performances, as well as a group number featuring over 125 singers.

Audience members are asked to bring a bag of nonperishable, nonbreakable groceries to donate. The donated food will go to the Christian Love Baptist Church Food Pantry in Modesto, Community Action Resources of Escalon Food Bank, Christian Fellowship Church Food Bank in Salida, Oakdale Community Sharing Christian Center Food Bank and Riverbank Christian Food Sharing.

The concert will be at 7:30 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 4300 N. Dale Road in Modesto.

Singalong ‘Messiah’

More singers are sought for the seventh annual “Messiah” singalong.

Vocalists of all ages and abilities are invited to participate in the performance of G.F. Handel’s “Messiah.” The community event is free and open to the public. Last year, more than 150 singers from across the region took part in the event.

The concert will be at 4 p.m. Nov. 23 at Trinity United Presbyterian Church, 1600 Carver Road in Modesto. Singers are encouraged to bring their own scores; however, copies will be available to borrow. For more information, call (209) 765-6388.

MJC string recital

Modesto Junior College presents its fall string recital Nov. 20.

The students of MJC orchestra and string director Anne Martin will perform solo works by Bartok, Breval, Haydn, Mozart and Rameau. The program opens with a performance by the elementary strings class. Student conductor Silva Kachadorian will lead the String Orchestra in an arrangement of “Norwegian Wood” by The Beatles, and pianist Yan Yan Chan will accompany the students.

The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. in the MJC East Campus recital hall, Music 108. Admission is free, but donations are accepted.

21 Chairs Project

The 21 Chairs Project – a collaboration between the Merced Mall and Merced Symphony Association – presents its gala and auction event Saturday.

The project had 21 area artists create chairs, which went on display at the Merced Mall to help raise awareness about the Merced Symphony Association and its music education efforts. At the gala event, the proceeds raised from the auction will go toward Merced Symphony youth programs.

The free gala event begins at 5:30 p.m., with the auction at 7 p.m. at the Merced Multicultural Arts Center, 645 W. Main St. For more, visit www.mercedsymphony.org.

Horszowski Trio

The Horszowski Trio comes to Stockton on Sunday as part of the 59th season of Stockton Friends of Chamber Music series.

The trio of violinist Jesse Mills, cellist Raman Ramakrishnan and pianist Rieko Aizawa was hailed by The New Yorker as “destined for great things.” Tickets are $25, and the show will be at 2:30 p.m. in the Faye Spanos Concert Hall at the University of the Pacific in Stockton. Turlock Concert Association

Mark your calendars for an appearance by the former lead vocalist of the New Christy Minstrels, William Florian, on Nov. 21.
