Classic fairy tale gets new twist in this all-ages musical production in Modesto

Opera Modesto will perform its genre twist to the classic tale of “Cinderella” at the State Theatre. A celebration of Tina Turner’s life will be presented in a musical at the Gallo Center for the Arts. In addition to other performances planned from Jan. 17-23, there will be remembrances as Martin Luther King Jr. Day approaches.
“Cinderella”
Opera Modesto presents a production of the fairy tale “Cinderella” at the State Theatre, a reimagined operetta by French composer Pauline Viardot. The familiar love story includes songs and “some musical surprises,” according to the theater’s website. The opera will be sung in English and is for all ages.

Tina Turner production
“TINA — The Tina Turner Musical” pulls into the Gallo Center. The production centers on the late music icon’s comeback story, how she broke barriers and became the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll, all set to the soundtrack of her hits.

“Dog Man”
“Dog Man: The Musical” will entertain all ages at the Gallo Center. Modesto MLK luncheon
The annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Luncheon, hosted by the city of Modesto and King-Kennedy Memorial Center board, returns to honor the civil rights leader. A longstanding tradition in the community, it brings together civic leaders, families, youth and supporters of King’s vision of unity, service and equal opportunity for all.

Mother Lode MLK program
“Liberty and Justice for All” will honor Martin Luther King Jr. in Sonora. The program will feature a panel of local immigrants who will share their stories of coming from across the globe to make the Mother Lode their home. Musical guests include Patrick and Linda Minor and Clan Dyken. The 90-minute program will be followed by a reception at the school library.
