More than 3,600 voters selected their favorite local bands, cafes, venues and events as the MAMA Awards were handed out Tuesday evening.
Chosen by the public, votes were cast from more than 20 states, from California to the East Coast, according to a press release from the Modesto Area Music Association. Votes also were sent in from other countries, including Mexico, Germany, Wales and France.
The MAMA Awards were handed out during an invitation-only ceremony featuring live performances by several local artists at the State Theatre. The event also was live-streamed.
Lifetime achievement awards were given to KTRB Radio, Modesto’s first commercial radio station, according to the release, and the Swanee Cowboys, Modesto’s first commercial band.
Chris Murphy and current City Councilmember Chris Ricci started the now-nonprofit Modesto Music Association more than two decades ago to celebrate live local music.
“Back in 2000, we celebrated at Club Maxx at the DoubleTree, and who would have thought that all these years later, we are still celebrating local music talent?” Murphy said in the release.
Murphy and MAMA director Middagh Goodwin co-hosted the evening.
