Community celebration set for return to Modesto, packed with activities and more
Spring gets particularly green in Modesto as the annual Earth Day in the Park returns. Music, theater and more make up other entertainment options in the region for April 19-25.
Earth Day celebration
The City of Modesto’s Earth Day in the Park is a community event to celebrate sustainability and environmentalism. Held at Graceada Park, it’s set to feature music, games, local mascots, recycling trivia, a chance to meet City Council members and the mayor, and more.

“Sittin’ In and Groovin’ Out”
High school students from Modesto City Schools will perform with JazzReach’s Metta Quintet at the Gallo Center for the Arts. The concert follows a JazzReach mentoring program for students “to bridge cultural, economic, religious and gender divides, and unify in the spirit of creative collaboration and making great music together,” according to the center’s website. Students will perform with Metta Quintet in the program. JazzReach is a nonprofit group that promotes the performance, creation and teaching of jazz music.

“Juno”
The Modesto Film Society presents 2007’s “Juno” as its next offering at the State Theatre. Faced with an unplanned pregnancy, 16-year-old Juno MacGuff “must navigate the complexities of adult life and find wisdom beyond her years,” according to the theater’s website.

“Emerging Artist” exhibit
The Stanislaus Arts Council Gallery’s “Emerging Artist” exhibition presents the work of new and rising talent in the Modesto region. A free reception is set for 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at the Modesto gallery, where the public can meet the artists, enjoy refreshments, and view the works.
The gallery has changed its hours “to better match when visitors actually come through our doors,” according to a release. New hours are noon to 6 p.m. Thursdays, noon to 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, closed Sundays through Wednesdays.

“The Marvelous Wonderettes”
Sierra Repertory Theatre presents “The Marvelous Wonderettes” at its Columbia State Park venue. The production, set during a high school prom in 1958, focuses on four friends with big dreams. Audiences will hear classic 1950s hits like “Lollipop,” “Dream Lover,” “Stupid Cupid” and “Lipstick on Your Collar.” In the second act, the Wonderettes reunite at their 10 year high school reunion, performing more songs from the ’50s and ’60s.
