Tony-winning show based on music icon’s life, filled with her hits, set for Modesto. When, where

The Gallo Center for the Arts brings in a tour of a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical based on the story of Cher. The venue also offers a show by another music icon, Paul Anka. These are just two of the entertainment options set in the Modesto region from March 22-28.

“The Cher Show”

A tour of the Broadway musical “The Cher Show” pulls into the Gallo Center for two nights of performances. The production includes 35 hits from Cher’s six decades of stardom, according to the center’s website. It’s a “musical of her story, and it’s packed with so much Cher that it takes three women to play her: the kid starting out, the glam pop star, and the icon.” The Broadway show earned two Tony Awards, best actress in a musical and best costume design for a musical for Bob Mackie.

Paul Anka

The iconic singer/songwriter brings his “Paul Anka — All the Hits — His Way” tour to the Gallo Center. The concert features his music from the last seven decades, including “Put Your Head on My Shoulder,” “Diana,” “My Way,” “Puppy Love” and “Lonely Boy,” backed by his band.

Ladies of Laughter

The Ladies of Laughter Funny & Fabulous Tour returns to the Gallo Center. The comedy show includes winners and the top talent from the Ladies of Laughter national competition. Performing in Modesto this year are Poppy Champlin, Maureen Langan and Stephanie Blum.

Vocal-guitar duo

Isabel Leonard and Pablo Sainz-Villegas will appear only once in Northern California during their limited-run U.S. tour — and that will be at the Gallo Center in Modesto. Spanish guitarist Sainz-Villegas joined with opera star Leonard in a worldwide broadcast live from Versailles in 2021, according to the center’s website. The artists decided to create a vocal-guitar program for their tour that features popular arias and songs.

Beatles tribute

“The Fab Four: The Ultimate Tribute” will bring the music of the Beatles to Turlock Community Theatre. The Emmy Award-winning Fab Four pay attention to detail in the show, according to the theater’s website, with note-for-note renditions of classics including “Can’t Buy Me Love,” “Yesterday,” “A Day in the Life,” “Twist and Shout,” “Here Comes the Sun” and “Hey Jude.”

Comedy at the State

The Willie Barcena & Homies comedy tour arrives at the State Theatre. “Raucous, irreverent, and never politically correct, Willie Barcena is one of the sharpest minds in comedy,” the State’s website says. He will be joined by comedians Robert Zapata and Dannon Green.

Film competition screening

Hosted by the State Theatre and The Modesto Artists Movement, the 48 Hour Film Competition Premiere screens films from the annual competition. The event at the State Theatre is described as a red-carpet celebration of local filmmaking.

“The Revolutionists”

Prospect Theater Project will stage the play “The Revolutionists,” directed by Laura Dickinson-Turner. It’s an “irreverent, girl-powered comedy set during the French Revolution’s Reign of Terror,” according to the company’s website. “This grand and dream-tweaked comedy is about violence and legacy, art and activism, feminism and terrorism, compatriots and chosen sisters, and how we actually go about changing the world.”

Cesar Chavez honored

The Cesar Chavez Community Celebration Committee of Stanislaus County will hold its third annual birthday celebration honoring the late Cesar Chavez. The event features a performance by Mariachi Divas de Cindy Shea, a Grammy Award-winning all-female mariachi group. Several other local groups will perform at the celebration, which also recognizes March as Women’s History Month.
