Modesto’s Timothy Olyphant takes on role in familiar genre. One of several new projects

Beyer High graduate and actor Timothy Olyphant gets back into the horror genre with his latest upcoming role.

Olyphant is among the cast of the film “The Trip,” adapted from the Norwegian horror thriller “I Onde Dager.”

It’s one of several new roles coming up for the Modesto-bred actor.

“The Trip” cast also includes Jason Segel, Samara Weaving (“Ready or Not”) and Juliette Lewis. It will be directed by Jorma Taccone (The Lonely Island), according to a story on the Hollywood Reporter website.

Production has begun in Finland on the film, in which “Segel and Weaving play a dysfunctional couple who travel to a remote cabin to reconnect but secretly plan to kill each other,” according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Olyphant’s other horror-based roles include starring in the Netflix sitcom “The Santa Clarita Diet” with Drew Barrymore.

“But one of his earliest onscreen roles even saw him don the infamous Ghostface killer’s mask in 1997’s Scream 2,” according to a story on Screen Rant. His other horror movies include the 2010 zombie film “The Crazies” and the 2003 adaptation of Stephen King’s “Dreamcatcher.”

The 2021 version of “The Trip” is currently available on Netflix.

“Endowed with a healthy dose of comedy, the original movie sees the homicidal plans of its leading couple take a turn for the worse, when their own murderous plots are interrupted by a trio of killers who had been hiding on the roof of the cabin they had chosen for their fateful getaway,” the Screen Rant story says.

“With Olyphant already a deft hand at blending both horror and comedy thanks to his work on The Santa Clarita Diet,” Screen Rant says, “his involvement will undoubtedly blend well with the proven comedic chops of Segel, Weaving, and Lewis.”

“The Trip” is just one of several upcoming projects for the actor.

According to IMDB.com, Olyphant stars in the upcoming Noah Hawley series “Alien: Earth.” The latest in the “Alien” franchise is set to be on Hulu in summer 2025. It’s another horror role in which he plays synth monster Kirsh.

IMDB.com also lists him with a starring role in the film “Havoc,” a crime thriller expected to be released in 2025; comedy crime thriller “Beef,” which has no release date listed; and an unspecified role in the comedy series “The Rambler” starring Owen Wilson, set for Apple TV+.

Olyphant has had a successful career in film and television — twice playing a U.S. marshal. He played Seth Bullock in the HBO series “Deadwood” and was an Emmy nominee for his role as Raylan Givens in the FX series “Justified.” He reprised the roles in “Deadwood: The Movie” and the show “Justified: City Primeval.”

Olyphant also garnered an Emmy nomination for his 2021 guest acting role in “The Mandalorian.”
